Don’t limit yourself!
Gone are the days of the strict colour rules … it’s all about individuality and personalizing your wedding to be an extension of you and your own personal styles. Many amazingly beautiful weddings use varieties of colours that work stunningly well together. Colour palettes help you pull togehter your vision and creates a theme scene … think of an English Garden with pastel shades of blues, pinks, peaches and yellows or a Muskoka fall with reds, oranges, browns and golds or a Tuscan Vineyard with shades of olive greens, eucalyptus greys and creamy whites … Using more than one neutral to enhance your colour palette can help pull your vision together and create a truly beautiful celebration.
Keeping it Simple
To create a cohesive flow throughout your atmosphere you should choose two to four colour combinations and stick to them. Narrowing your colour palette to just a few colours will have all those amazing details you’ve chosen to enhance your wedding day feel like they belong together and within your vision. Everything from your bouquet to centerpieces to floral accents will feel neat and tidy … creating a more elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. If you are after a more organic undone look, than opt for using a few hues and shades of a particular colour. Or if you are wanting a more single toned event go bold with hues and shades of one particular colour palette like stunning purples or dreamy creamy whites for a more classic and elegant affair.
Our colour philosophy here at Sue Gallo Designs is to create a celebration that is an extension of your own personal tastes and style … so that means avoiding colour trends … well unless that colour trend is all about you! Think about what colours make you happy, what colours you gravitate towards, the colours that you live with on a daily basis … those are the colours that you should choose to enhance your wedding day with … not the latest Pantone colour of the year. Don’t get me wrong, these colours can be amazing … but use those tones sparingly and choose hues and shades that work well with who you are … just because you love a certain wedding blog or Pinterest inspiration board doesn’t mean that it’s for you.
It’s all about the Balance
Okay, lets face it … styling & designing a wedding is all about colour and how you incorporate them into your celebrations. One of the biggest mistake couples make while choosing their colours is not considering balance. Just because you are using two dominate colours, certainly doesn’t mean that you have to use them equally through your wedding. Choose a dominate colour, make this colour take center stage as it will affect all of the decisions you make when choosing the rest of your decor elements such as linen, lighting, flowers, gowns, stationary and so much more. You want your colours to compliment each other, allowing your favourite to shine through. So if you love orange … pick a few shades and hues that are in between such as apricot, peach, and coral. A thoughful balancing act between colours is key when making colour combinations look chic and simply perfect.
Take a bit of a risk …. you aren’t planning a Christmas Party
To be avoided by all means … keep your colours from reminding your guests of their favourite holiday. Chose hues and shades that stays clear of resembling a holiday … so if red is your desired colour, try tweaking the colour palette by incorporating cherry reds with pomegranate, raspberry, marsala or merlot. Introduce golds, pearl, or metallic elements to break up the and downplay the obvious colour connotations.
Don’t fight with your venue’s colour palette
Quite often we hear “I hate the colour of the walls of my venue, the shade of the carpet is hideous” Okay … so you need to have a colour palette in mind when you head out to begin venue hunting. Think about your colour palette and the hues and shades that you want to use … I’m not saying that your venue choice has to be made by the perfect shade of the venue’s floors or walls, but you should consider it’s atmosphere when choosing either your perfect venue or your perfect colour palette. Use the venue’s colour palette to enhance your own. If you love pink but the venue has dark tones, considering using softer blushes and pale tones instead of hot pink.
